About Animal Science Research Institute of Iran

The history of the Animal Science Research Institute of Iran goes back to 1933. This institute was originally established as Heydarabad Animal Husbandry Agency with the aim of introducing exotic livestock and breeding of local livestock. In 1975 the agency was renamed as Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and focused its activities towards increasing the quality and quantity of livestock products.

After our revolution in 1978 the activities of the institute was extended to 28 natural resources and animal husbandry research centers across the country. In 1998, with the employment of new experts, research development in animal science and related fields and revision of duty descriptions and organizational chart, the institute was renamed as Animal Science Research Institute (ASRI).

Structure and Personnel

The central organization of the Animal Science Research Institute of Iran (ASRI) is located in Karaj, Alborz. However, the institute has 28 research departments located in nearly all agricultural research centers throughout Iran. There are 120 members of scientific board from which 40 are active at the main organization and the rest are in the dependent stations.

  • Animal product manufacturers and stockbreeders benefiting from economic, political and social power in the society
  • Development of regional Animal Science Research Centers based on technical, financial and administrative co-operations and contributions of the stock breeders and their organizations
  • Preservation and conservation of animal genetic resources (livestock, poultry and honey bees)
  • Developing the livestock and poultry capacities and optimum exploitation of these capacities by applying modern and advanced technologies
  • Country possession of pure and dual purpose breeds of livestock and poultry resulting from the native and imported improved breeds

Department of Biotechnology Research was established in 1994 and extended its research activities aiming to apply biotechnology research approach to increase the quantity and quality of animal products fulfilling the demands of the country.

Areas of research:

  • Animal molecular genetics and breeding
  • Application of molecular markers for conserving animal genetic resources
  • Application of molecular markers for mapping of specific traits
  • Animal nutrition
  • Increasing animal feed efficiency
  • Converting animal product residues to animal feed
  • Producing probiotics as animal feed supplements
  • Animal product processing
  • Developing new methods to increase sustainability and quality of animal products
  • Increasing reproduction efficiency through IVF, embryo transfer and other reproductive technologies
  • Applying modern and advanced technologies in animal science such as nanotechnology and nuclear energy

Animal breeding and genetics keyboard_arrow_down

The department of animal breeding and genetic was established in 1999, after the revision of the institute organization chart.

Areas of research:

  • Identification, characterization and conservation of native animal genetic resources
  • Determination of suitable methods of animal genetic conservation
  • Conservation and increasing the size of endangered or at risk populations of native livestock and poultry
  • Providing the simulation schedules for evaluating the performed breeding projects
  • Investigation on systems of animal crossbreeding
  • Performing crossbreeding and generating efficient breeds with the purpose of producing new genetic combinations with improved productivity and adaptability

Honey bee department was established in 1968 and its research activities started in 1978. Department of honey bee have 8 researcher and 5 technician with 30 project. The facilities of department are honey and other honey bee product laboratory, apiaries with about 1,000 colonies, Honey extraction room, wax warehouse, honey bee museum.

The department of Animal Nutrition and Physiology was established in 1969 and expanded its research activity toward chemical composition for livestock and poultry feeding in 1989.

Areas of research:

  • Assessing the nutritive value of conventional feedstuffs
  • Identification, up-grading, processing and optimizing the utilization of the agricultural by-products and other natural feel resources in animal nutrition
  • Finding new and non-conventional feed resources and introducing the optimum utilization procedures
  • Determination of nutrient requirements of livestock and poultry
  • Introducing optimum procedures for utilization of the forage crops by livestock
  • Improving feed and nutritional managements in farms
  • Identification of the resources and other capabilities in the country required for producing mineral and organic supplements for animals
  • Introducing optimum procedures for management of livestock on the range lands
  • Determining the causes of forages and feedstuff post-harvest quality reduction and introducing applied methods for suitable collection, transportation and storage
  • Introducing the knowledge to produce feedstuff from local agricultural waste
  • Identification of salt-tolerant forage
  • Introducing double-purpose cattle

Animal production management department was established in 1998 with the goal of determining the strategies and optimal use of resources and capabilities of animal production. The objectives of the department have been combining science and technology while considering different social, economic and climate conditions of the country.

  • Investigation and assessment of different methods of animal production and reproduction
  • Conducting production and reproduction management research
  • Investigating effective socio-economic parameters on animal production management
  • Assessing sanitation of animal production farms
  • Investigation on feedlot management in order to introduce proper method for various regions of the country
  • Exploration on required modern technologies by animal production farms
  • Assessing range-lands animal management
  • Investigation on management of animal production farms machinery and equipments
  • Analysis on expanding the range of heat tolerance animals in the tropical and subtropical areas
  • Studies on reproduction behaviour of farm animals and poultry
  • Conducting research on reproducing suitable reproduction techniques
  • Performing studies on semen collection and processing in artificial insemination
  • Exploring effective parameters causing reduction of reproduction in farm animals

The department of animal production processing was established in 1996 to develop research activities in the field of fibers, animal skin, milk and dairy products, meat and other animal products.

Areas of research:

I. Fiber and animal skin:

  • Investigating production, distribution, marketing and exporting of animal fibers
  • Conducting research on improving quality and quantity of animal skin
  • Analysis on specific characteristics of fibers required for carpet and other textile industries
  • Assessing the potential of exporting various types of raw animal skin
  • Examining the effects of genetic and environmental factors on fiber characteristics
  • Research on suitable methods of shearing, processing, quality controlling and storage of fibers
  • Investigation on standard methods of grading, processing, packaging and storage of skin

II. Milk:

  • Investigating the bacterial contamination of milk and dairy products
  • Applying various techniques for improving the quality of milk products and in particular cheese
  • Exploration on minimized time required for cheese processing
  • Improving the techniques of packaging and storage of milk products

III. Meat:

  • Investigation on new methods for slaughtering
  • Studies on the optimum use of by-products from slaughter houses for industrial purpose and animal feedstuff
  • Application of standard methods on packaging and storage of meat and meat products
  • Exploring proper methods of preserving meat and meat products
  • Determining main factor affecting physical and chemical characteristics and microbial contamination of meat products from slaughtering to consumption

III. Meat:

  • Investigation on appropriate techniques of packaging, preserving and supplying poultry eggs to market


A complex of specific well-equipped laboratories has been aggregated in the main building of the institute. The laboratories and the qualified experts and technicians not only facilitate the research activities of the institute, but also provide services to clients.

I- Animal nutrition laboratories consist of the following fields:

  • Chemical analysis of feed
  • Determination of biological values of feed
  • Biochemistry and nutritional physiology

II- Animal products processing laboratories:

  • Animal fibers (wool, hair, mohair, etc.)
  • Milk and dairy products
  • Meat and meat products
  • Egg processing

III- Animal Biotechnology laboratories:

  • Genomics
  • Microbiology
  • Enzyme and protein
  • Egg processing

IIII- Animal reproduction laboratories:

  • Artificial insemination of farm animals
  • Endocrinology
  • Sperm, ovum and embryo production and transfer
  • Sperm and embryo bank of farm animals

V- Honey bee laboratories:

  • Artificial insemination
  • Honey bee products and determining the standards
  • Pests and pathogens of honey bees

Research Farms

There are four main research stations at ASRI and a big research station in the north of Iran on development of dual-purpose cattle breeds which all provides facilities for research activities of the institute.

  • Cattle, buffalo and camel research station
  • Sheep, goat and horse breeding station
  • Poultry including meat and egg type as well as experimental lines and ostrich
  • Honey bee, apiaries of 1000 honey bee colonies, artificial insemination field rooms, honey extraction room, wax warehouse, honey bee museum

The main research projects

There are currently five major projects at the Animal Science Research Institute of Iran:

  • Honey bee queen breeding, to conserve the Iranian honey bee, Apis mellifera meda, and to improve pest resistance and behaviour
  • Sugar cane waste conversion to animal feed
  • Creation of a dairy goat breed for cold climate of North West of Iran
  • Turkey hybrids in North West of Iran
  • Community-based breeding program on Sanjabi sheep
